Gentleman in a Blue Coat with a Yellow Striped Waistcoat

Amormino

Amormino1 portrayed a gentleman in a blue coat from which a high white shirt collar and a white and yellow patterned waistcoat emerge; they provide a vibrant accent of colour in an otherwise very calm portrait. The three-quarter profile shows the sitter facing the viewer. The artist followed a similar approach in the few other portraits of gentlemen that are known by him:2 the background is monochrome and the clothing is rendered in bold gouache colours, whereas the face is delicately drawn and rendered in gentle shades of pink with soft transitions. This approach makes the faces appear warm and present, even though the sitters themselves may wear a somewhat reserved expression.

J. S. O.

1 The artist possibly hailed from Italy. All that is known about him to date is that he was listed on the roll of students of Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin, although his name was deleted again. (Carnet d’Augustin, Musée du Louvre, Paris, inv. no. RF51882, p. 39).
