The time of Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI of France, is an exciting period in terms not only of style, but also of the techniques used to create miniatures. This exhibition presents the most significant miniaturists from France, which led the art world at the time, side by side with works by influential artists from other European countries.

The end of a political era, dissolution and a new beginning created the conditions in which a new type of portrait developed that was characterised by increasing realism. The accompanying first ever bilingual catalogue (in German and English) reproduces all the works along with commentaries in the form of essays by various experts on aspects of French miniature painting of the period.
