Peter Edouard Stroely, George IV as Prince of Wales

This is a beautiful description of a portrait of the later King George IV painted by German miniaturist Edouard Stroely. Stroely was working for the British court at the time he created this painting. Although he repeated a well-known idealized representation of the future king, his portrait is moody and lively. He modeled the face lightly and finely, emphasized the eyes, long eyelashes, fine hair structure, and sideburns. The sensual expression combined with the slightly tousled hair gives the painting a daring and romantic touch. This was probably to the prince’s taste, who was already known for his extravagant lifestyle before his accession to the throne.
