Franscesco Emanuele Scotto, Lady writing on Bark, c. 1800

A seated young lady writes with a brush on the bark of a tree on which the letters "ANGELICA E M" can be deciphered. This is undoubtedly a reference to "Angelica e Medoro", a pair of lovers from an Italian epic that was particularly popular at the time.

The lady wears the light and natural fashion inspired by the French Revolution: a chemise dress made of loosely falling white fabric, which reveals the shoulder and the deep décolleté, emphasized by a bright orange-red scarf. The curls of unpowdered hair frame the face.

The naturalness of the depiction is crowned by her unfeigned and loving view of the recipient of the miniature.
