Lieselotte Tansey's Favourite Items
Exhibition: Bomann-Museum, Celle from June 2000 to September 2002.
The first exhibition focused on favourite pieces of the collectors Mr and Mrs Tansey. This was the first public presentation of around 150 miniatures from the collection. This selection clearly demonstrates individual taste, but also revealed the scope and quality of the collection.
One particular focus is French portrait miniatures from the 18th century, with their especially graceful and atmospheric likenesses. Yet at the same time these “favourite pieces” are juxtaposed with so many other works that the collection provides an insight into European miniature painting, which reached its heyday in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Many important artists, countries, schools and painting styles are represented here.
The catalogue presents the works in pictures and words, including introductory essays on the history of this collection and methods employed by miniature painters.
