Miniatures of the Revolutionary Period

Miniatures of the Revolutionary Period

Exhibition: Bomann-Museum, Celle, from April 2005 to August 2008

From 1789 to 1799, lively and individual miniature portraits were painted depicting people in a time of turbulent upheaval. A total of 169 works from the years of the French Revolution illuminate for the first time an epoch that gave miniature portraiture new impetus and a new direction.

The third exhibition from the Tansey Collection was dedicated to the years of political change between 1789 and 1799, a period when a noticeably large number of miniature portraits were created. It was precisely the uncertain circumstances that aroused the desire for small, transportable and personal likenesses. The miniaturists responded to the keen demand by increasing their output and becoming exceptionally inventive. The accompanying catalogue documents the works with full-size colour illustrations, explanatory notes, details of the origins of the pieces, literature references, information on the politics and fashions of the day, and the situation of the miniaturists in Paris.
