Gentleman with Red and Blue Cape

Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin

This portrait shows an unknown gentleman in a brown coat and blue cape with a red collar in front of a cloudy sky painted in English manner. He is looking at the observer with a satisfied calmness. It is a studio copy of an original which Augustin probably used as an object of study for his students rather than selling it.1 Augustin's notebook, the Carnet vert, proves that he taught over 400 students in the course of his life.2 They came to Paris from various countries to study with him; most of them, however, considered the art of miniature painting to be a fashionable pastime rather than serious work from which they could make a living. Since this studio copy shows a skill which could scarcely be reached by an amateur, it may be concluded that it was created by a future professional painter.

1 In the early 20th century, Augustin's original was in the Oppenheim Collection and later became part of the David Weill Collection and Clore Collection. It is illustrated in Jeannerat, 1957, p. 33. There are copies by Villair (Christie's Geneva, November 9, 1976, no. 128), Verquelle (dated 1819, Christie's London October 14, 1998, no. 224), Ponsin (dated 1839, Sotheby's London, April 11, 1996, no. 147), and by anonymous miniaturists (Buchheit 1928, plate 19, no. 155).
2 The document is in the Louvre, inv. no. R.F. 51882. For further information on Augustin's studio and school cf. B. Pappe, "Ausbildung im Miniaturmalen für Künstler und Dilettanten: Die Ateliers von Augustin und Isabey in Paris", in: Pappe, Otten and Schmieglitz-Otten 2002, pp. 11-29.
