In this portrait of a gentleman both the sitter's body and the different textiles are convincingly reproduced. Aldenrath painted the gentleman's clothes in broad bodycolour and with hatchings in the shades. The simple composition and the sitter's accurately painted physiognomy are typical for the portraits of German Romanticism.
