Peter Cross

Peter Cross, son of the London cloth merchant Anthony Cross, married Arabella, daughter of the sculptor Thomas Burman in 1669, and in 1712/13 he married Elisabeth, the widowed sister-in-law of his first wife. In 1678 he was appointed as Nicholas Dixon’s successor to the post of “Limner to the King”. In 1964 Schidlof believed that Lawrence and Peter Cross were two different artists, owing to the confusing monograms LC and PC, but it later became clear that the names referred to one and the same painter.
