Charles or Hippolyte de Chamisso
Chamisso, Charles (Charles Louis), Comte de, (Boncourt castle/Champagne, 1774 [baptism] - 1822), and Hippolyte (Charles Louis Marie), Comte de (Boncourt castle/ Champagne, 1769 [baptism] - 1841). The brothers Adalbert and Charles devoted themselves to miniature painting. In 1794 they emigrated to Germany because of the French Revolution where they worked at German courts. In 1797, they showed their works at the Academy of Berlin and became its members. In the same year the brothers travelled to Russia where they were very successful with their miniatures. In 1801 they returned to France. In fact it is hard to judge whether the miniatures signed “Chamisso” should be ascribed to Charles or to Hippolyte.
