Jean-Théodore Graff

Jean-Théodore Graff (1760–1821), son of the musician Jean Georges Graff and Anne-Charlotte Bonorden, was born in Hamburg but lived with his parents in Strasbourg from 1776 onwards. It is believed that he learned painting with Jean-Daniel Heimlich. On September 9, 1793, he married Marie-Salomé Baldner (1758-1824). The couple had two children: Marie Madeleine (1794-1838) and Jean-Théodore the younger (1797-1823), who later also became a painter. Jean-Théodore Graff lived in Strasbourg at 15 Rue du Coin Brulé in 1795, at 65 Rue du Marché aux Vins in 1796, and then at 3 Rue de la Mésange. In 1808, his address was 11 Rue du Jeu des Enfants, and in 1815, 14 Rue Finkwiller. In 1804, he presumably worked in Stuttgart for a certain period of time; a miniature painter named Graff advertised in the Stuttgartische Anzeigen that year; he lodged at 7 Seilthor. Graff died in Strasbourg on July 22, 1821. (The artist was identified by Henry-Noel Canival, Paris, in January 2025).
