Franz de Paula Gundaccar I, Prince of Colloredo-Mansfeld

Austrian

An unknown miniature painter created this portrait of a gentleman wearing a dark blue frock coat and the star and sash of the Hungarian Order of St. Stephen.1 According to the inscription on the reserve of the piece, the sitter could be Franz de Paula Count of Colloredo-Waldsee (1736 - 1806), an Austrian statesman, Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and Imperial Court Councillor.
The Colloredo line of descent came through the Swabian Waldsee family who moved to Italy in the Middle Ages where they were given land and allowed to build the Castle of Colloredo near Udine in Italy’s Friuli region.2
