Lady in White Dress in Park Scenery
Busset
Busset depicted his sitter in a white chemise dress in front of dark park scenery; the rose blossoms on the right create a tender transition between the background, the lady’s light coloured dress and her complexion. This beautiful contrast is intended to draw the observer’s attention to the elf-like sitter. In this miniature it is particularly striking that the lady is not appropriately placed within the landscape and that the two levels of the picture do not form a consistent perspective, which proves that the background was added later. However, this lack of perfection is balanced by the lady’s grace and tenderness. Fully corresponding to the ideal of naturalness, she is represented with curly, unpowdered hair. Her white veil falls lightly onto her shoulders.1
