Lady in a Landscape
Joseph Marie Bouton (attributed)
Seated on a chair in front of a balustrade and with her arm on the back-rest, a young woman looks at the spectator. The background shows an idealised landscape with trees and mountains. The evening sky takes up three quarters of the image, creating a tender pastel-coloured frame for the portrait. The technique of this miniaturist reveals him to be an excellent draughtsman: the strokes are clearly visible, especially in the presentation of the sky and the dress. The flesh parts, however, are much more delicate and without visible transition.
