Marie Gabrielle Capet

Capet came from humble beginnings in Lyon and travelled to Paris at the age of twenty to study portrait painting. Her instructor was Labille-Guiard; the two had a friendly relationship, and Capet also lived in Labille-Guiard’s house. Capet exhibited works at the Place Dauphine from 1781 and 1785, at the Salon de la Correspondance in 1785 and 1786, and in the Salon from 1791 to 1814. She painted in oils and pastels as well as in miniature.
