John Smart
Smart was a student at the St. Martin’s Lane Academy and received an award from the Society of Artists in 1755, and in each of the following three years. From 1762 to 1783, he exhibited his works at the Society of Artists. In 1775 he became its director, and eight years later he was appointed vice president. Between 1784 and 1811 he showed his miniatures at the Royal Academy. From 1785 to 1796, he lived in India creating portraits of English personages, work which was generously paid.
