Louis Marie Sicard, called Sicardi

After training with his father Jean-Pierre-Antoine, Sicard presumably studied under Brenet. In 1771 he was appointed Professeur adjoint at the academy in Bordeaux but it seems that he did not take part in any exhibitions there. At around 1770 he named himself Peintre du roi du Portugal. In 1774 or 1775 he left for Paris, where he painted many miniatures of the king for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These miniatures were mounted on valuable boxes and given away as official state presents. From 1791 to 1819 Sicardi exhibited at the Salon and was one of the most popular miniaturists of his day. Apart from miniature painting he also painted in oils, and created humorous, erotic designs for graphic prints. His pupils included Isabey, Périn-Salbreux, Bôbe, Bouchardy and Carrier.
