Jean-Baptiste Joseph Duchesne de Gisors

Duchesne initially received his artistic training from his father, who was a sculptor. In his youth, he created religious paintings for churches in his home region. After his wedding in 1793, he travelled to Paris and took lessons from François-André Vincent and learned miniature painting from Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin. Napoleon held the artist’s talent in high regard and, in 1814, made him a member of the Legion of Honour. He received numerous commissions for miniatures in enamel from Louis XVIII. He exhibited some of his works at the Paris Salon from 1802 to 1842 and was awarded a medal in 1821. His son Martin Archimède also became a painter and miniaturist.
