Lady Symbolising the Source of a River
Augustin Dubourg (Georges Nicolas Toussaint Augustin)
Clad only with a transparent veil which has almost completely slipped off her shoulders, this lady is shown in a river landscape surrounded by rocks. As a personification of the river source, her arm rests on a barrel out of which water is pouring - the antique symbol for river gods and nymphs. Considering the fact that antique nymphs had amorous adventures with gods, one may conclude that the picture contains a strongly erotic component. The allegorical presentation of sitters was in fashion until the end of the 18th century. It is probable that the client who ordered this miniature has given precise instructions in this respect.
The lady's pale, masterly modelled body stands out against the grey shades of the background. Her face, framed by powdered curls, is painted with care and most delicate shades.
